"To read is to fly..."

"To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.”
- A C Grayling

I haven't posted a good quote in a while and this metaphor really made me smile.  I think it's sometimes hard for me to put my love of reading into words, but the next time someone asks me why I spend so much of my time with my nose in a book I may just respond, "To read is to fly".

This touches on something I've been thinking about lately: reading as a conversation that is not limited by time or space. A truly proficient reader would be able to understand not just contemporary writers, but those who lived a thousand years before--and theoretically, also those who are to come a thousand years later.

And I think the problem I have with a lot of contemporary writing about books (i.e., "book blogging"--LOL!) is that it doesn't seem to be open to that wider perspective. But how to translate flight and the sensation of soaring into blog posts??? Hmmm . . .

Love this quote! I love reading so much I just can't imagine why everyone doesn't do it. I know someone who says that when she always looks for bookshelves when she visits someone's house for the first time. She figures if they don't have books it's not a friendship she cares to pursue. I wouldn't go that far but I think I understand where she's coming from.
