Middlesex

First comes the apology for my unexpected blogging hiatus.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I was a bit under the weather last week.  Once I was feeling more human, I was busy playing catch-up at work and trying to get ready for the holidays (service projects, card writing, shopping, party planning).  But as a very special return post, I'm happy to share a review of a book that impressed my socks off - happy Christmas socks, that is, featuring little puppies and kitties in Santa hats... the socks, not the book.

Ambitious in scope and epic in execution, Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides is an amazing story not just for its sweeping family saga but for its remarkable narrator. Calliope "Cal" Stephanides is a hermaphrodite - genetically male but raised as a female - and the genetic mutation that led to his condition is rooted in the history of his family. Though Cal is introduced immediately, the majority of the story is told in the past - from Cal's grandparents, Greek immigrants Lefty and Desdemona; to his parents Milton and Tessie.

The unique relationships between the two couples is almost as captivating as their surroundings. Settling in Detroit, Michigan, Lefty and Desdemona's tale corresponds to the city's glory days of Ford. As the next generation takes the focus of the narration, the landscape shifts as well and Cal's parents witness the race riots of the sixties and follow the white exodus to suburban Grosse Pointe, where Cal and his brother are raised.

Eugenides succeeds not only in revealing the complex history of Detroit, but in telling the book with an amazing flair for detail. Some of the characters are painted so richly with personalities that jump off the page while others are classified precisely by their lack thereof. Cal's parents were complete with their own back-stories, hobbies, quirks, and talents; meanwhile Cal's brother is only ever referred to cleverly as "Chapter Eleven". Everything about the story feels real and more than once I found myself running an internet search on a business, neighborhood, or event to distinguish facts from Eugenides's fiction.
I must admit that I had this book on my "To Read" list for a long time and was unfairly prejudiced against the story - which I assumed would revolve primarily around gender identity issues. What I found was a book that did deal with gender and sexuality, but through the eyes of a witty and unique narrator that I came to love, because I was first introduced to his captivating family saga. I was swept up by the Stephanides's history and as Cal interspersed his own struggles into the tale - complete with a decent dose of science and genetics - I felt like a member of the family. I'm also not normally swayed by awards and accolades on book covers, but Middlesex deserves all the praise and attention it has received. I was thoroughly amazed by this book and can easily say it's one of the best I have read this year.

And the Winner is... (Hungry For You giveaway)

Congratulations to Onge the winner of an eBook copy of
Hungry For You by A.M. Harte!

On surviving a zombie apocalypse, Onge said,
"My survival or not depends on where I am. I work overnights at walmart and if the apocalypse happens then my coworkers and I have some ideas on how to survive. If it is anywhere else I'm not sure I'd make it. Maybe I need to start carrying a bat with me everywhere I go."
"Shop smart. Shop S-Mart."
If there's one thing I learned from watching Army of Darkness, it's don't mess up the magic words when reading the necronomicon.  But if there are two things I learned from watching Army of Darkness, they're don't mess up the words when reading the necronomicon; and superstore employees are definitely the folks you want to team up with when zombies are on the loose!

Congratulations, Onge, and hope you enjoy the book!

And the Winner is... (Progeny Prize Pack)

I just realized I never announced the winner of the Progeny Prize Pack giveaway!
Congratulations to Hugh!
Hope you enjoy the book as well as your new stylish book mark to track your progress!  Thanks to everyone who entered the giveaway and for those who did not win, there's still time to win the eBook giveaway of Three Sisters!

Happy 200 posts!

"200 posts?!  So what do you want?  A medal?"  Well... yes, actually!

Do you ever stop and look back at something you did a year ago and ask yourself "What was I thinking?"  Maybe your moment of "WIT" was an ill-timed encounter with an angry petting zoo goat, or perhaps a cannon-ball jump into an outdoor pool (air temp 87, water temp 62), or maybe you started a book blog.

I don't remember exactly how or why I started this blog aside from the fact that my previous personal blog had gone rather stale and my general thoughts on life were becoming split between public enough to share on Facebook or private enough to be kept in my personal journal.  And yet my reading and reviewing habits were ever-blossoming.  LibraryThing and GoodReads became great tools for cataloging my books and connecting with reading friends; but neither really served my desire to discuss the books I read and other bookish topics with people as voraciously excited about reading as myself!  And so began Her Book Self.

200 posts later, I'm a little amazed at what this endeavor has turned into!  I started simple wanting to focus on book reviews, author interviews, and bookish quotes.  And then I discovered some memes to join in, hot topics to discuss, challenges to try, and of course the joy of giveaways!  Yet this blog would be nothing without the precious comments left behind as small bits of validation that I'm not just talking to myself.  Thank you to those that have read my random ramblings and cared enough to tell me just how silly I am that you appreciate my thoughts!

Happy 200 Posts and here's to many, many more!

And the Winner is... (Vessel: The Advent Giveaway)

The winner of one paperback copy of Vessel: The Advent by Tominda Adkins is...

On roadtrips and traveling, Nora had this to say:
Road trips in my family are usually pretty chaotic. My sister complains the whole time, my mom tries to make it a ton more exciting than it actually is, and my dad complains the whole time. But somehow, I usually have a ton of fun! We usually go via car, but sometimes we fly. My favorite destination we've been to was Niagara Falls, but we went during a record heatwave and it was above 100 degrees the entire week. Just our luck :]
Congratulations and hope you enjoy the book!  For Nora and all those who took advantage of the free download, feel free to stop back to my review and share your thoughts on Vessel when you finish it!  And thank you again to Tominda Adkins for sponsoring this giveaway!

And The Winner Is... (Hunger Games giveaway)

Congratulations to Ashley, winner of The Hunger Games giveaway!

On why she was entering the contest Ashley plain and simply stated,

BBAW - Future Treasures & The One Lovely Blog Award

Book Blogger Appreciation Week is wrapping up and today's reflection is to ponder Future Treasures - to look back on what we've most enjoyed about this week and to share blogging goals for the future.  I don't know that I have many blogging goals for the next year other than to continue on doing what I'm doing.  I've always lived more on the five month than the five year plan.  I suppose I could throw out another teaser for The Hunger Games giveaway that I will be hosting soon, but the first part of today's prompt is much easier for me.  I've enjoyed everything about Book Blogger Appreciation Week.  The writing prompts have been really fun and I love all the posts on the BBAW blog too.  Mostly, though I love the community spirit.  I feel that this week has introduced me to many new book blogs and has brought many new readers to Her Book Self for the first time. Thanks to everyone who has stopped by, and I look forward to connecting with you more in the future!

In the spirit of celebrating the book blogging community, I want to take this opportunity to share some love for my fellow bloggers and pass on a blog award that was given to me last month.  I was fortunate to have been awarded the One Lovely Blog Award by both Crazy Bookworm and Ramblings of a (Future) Librarian.  I love reading both these blogs and their reviews are always interesting and insightful!  Thank you both for recognizing Her Book Self and considering my blog to be as lovely as yours!  And as with many awards, the "rules" say to pass it on to up to fifteen other bloggers.

First I want to award this to Tif Talks Books and Angieville.  Swapping interviews was definitely a highlight of BBAW and I am so glad to have discovered both of these very lovely blogs!

My next pick is Baja Greenawalt's Cozy Book Nook.  Doesn't that title just incite the need to check out that blog?  It's a compilation blog but there's always something interesting being discussed or commented on and it's nice to know there are others in the world who can conceive of something as beautiful as wanting to match a bookmark to a book!

And while I'm speaking of beautiful ideas, this award is also going to Tiny Library who won me over as a follower after posting a picture of bookshelves organized by color!  There are wonderful posts on Tiny Library about books and libraries, but those color-sorted shelves are certainly a sight to behold!

Which gives me another great segue because another great sight to behold is the site over at Misfit Salon.  I really love everything about this blog and Stephanie is a great review writer but if I were judging mostly on "Lovely"-ness, I'd have to pick Misfit Salon for one of  the most unique and creative headers I've ever seen.

Unique and creative also describe writer Helen Smith and her blog is wonderful.   She's the kind of author that seems generally interested in other bloggers, whether or not they've ever read her work.  A Kindle discount sealed the deal on me purchasing her novel Alison Wonderland, but truthfully it was Ms. Smith stopping by with a Happy Birthday comment on my blog that really made me *have* to read her work!  Of course, every time I stop by her site, I find myself wishing I lived in the UK...

Which brings me to the next recipient who is in the UK, Zee's Worldly Obsessions.  I know I've previously raved about Zee but her blog is just great and definitely One Lovely Blog!  I love too, how Zee frequently replies to comments.  Her blog is very friendly and conversational and when we're discussing things back and forth, I often forget how many miles (and a great big ocean) separate us.

And speaking of conversational, I want to also recognize Kerian's Thoughts.  I first "met" Kerian through Library Thing and she has excellent taste in books.  Hers are recommendations that I can almost guarantee I will love and I always enjoy discussing past, current and future reads with her.  Her blog is absolutely beautiful and I only wish she posted more frequently so I could read her great writing more often!  ;)

So I guess it's about time to stop....but speaking of Stop, I didn't yet mention The Book Stop!  Blogger curlygeek04 shares my eclectic taste in books and is also something of an example to me in understanding that it's okay to unabashedly love your Kindle!

I know I could keep going, especially with all the blogs I've discovered this week, but with awards like these I feel they're a little more special if I choose fewer recipients.  This isn't just me pulling a random portion of my blogroll, but really thinking about bloggers who have One Lovely Blog!  Congratulations and hope everyone gets the chance to check out these great blogs!

Happy Book Blogger Appreciation Week to all!  Thanks to everyone who has visited here for the first time.  Double thanks to those who have left comments and/or started to follow me!  I'll try to return follows but I'm a little behind checking out everyone's awesome blogs but please keep coming back, I love interacting with all of you!

Book Blogger Appreciation Week

September 13-17 is Book Blogger Appreciation Week!  If you're a fellow Book Blogger, I hope you feel appreciated!  Though I heard about BBAW back in May, I didn't choose to nominate Her Book Self for any of the awards.  In hindsight, I suppose it would have been fun to throw my hat in the ring for Best New Blog, but at that time I really didn't know if I would enjoy maintaining this blog and I didn't know if anyone would ever actually read this blog.  So needless to say, I chose not to enter.  But fear not, as a Cubs fan, I have plenty of practice in saying, "There's always next year!"  I still want to recognize this week though and take part in some of the festivities!  Stay tuned for an interview with a fellow book blogger, another blog award, and of course now would be a great time for you to peruse my blogroll and stop over to show some love for all the other awesome book bloggers out there!
This year's BBAW logo and theme: A Treasure Chest of Infinite Books and Infinite Blogs

The Versatile Blogger Award

One of the very best things about book blogging these past three months (would you believe I've only been at this officially for three months??) has been interacting with other readers across the world on the blogosphere.  I've always loved to share my passion for reading with other people and it's fun and exciting to read what others have to say about books I've enjoyed and to find new authors and titles based on the reviews of other readers and bloggers.  I got into all this never really expecting any recognition for what I do. Truthfully, comments are the best praise I can ask for, that someone would read my thoughts and care to take the time to converse with me is hugely gratifying.  And yet, one of my fellow bloggers has graced me with an award: The Versatile Blogger Award!

Zee's Worldly Obsessions bestowed this badge upon the much less worldly Her Book Self and I can't think of a better way to say thank you than to encourage you all to check out Zee's wonderful blog.  A wonderful review writer, Zee is one of many bloggers to blame for my grotesquely long TBR list as almost every time I stop by, I find another must read book to add to my list!  And as with every blog award of this nature, this one comes with a few stipulations.  The first is to share seven random things about yourself and then choose fifteen other blogs to pass the award to.  So here goes seven random things about me:

1. R.A. Salvatore is my favorite author.  I think that counts as a random fact because I've yet to blog about one of his books.

2. I am a research scientist in the field of pediatric oncology.  I don't know why I picked such a challenging and frustrating career, but I really hope one day I can look back at the progress we've made and say that it was all worth it.

3. I'm the opposite of a picky eater.  I'll try anything once, and with the exception of super spicy foods and onions (which don't agree with me) there's very little that I don't eat.

4. If time and money were no object, I would take some serious vacations.  Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Italy, Ireland, England, Scotland, and Peru are all countries I'd love to visit.  (I'd also love to travel more across the US and really want to visit more National Parks - especially Yosemite, Yellowstone, Denali, Glacier, and the Grand Canyon.)

5. I come from a pretty big family and my siblings, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents are some of my very favorite people to hang out with.  They're all really fun, interesting, and entertaining and our gatherings - big or small - are almost always marked by boisterous laughter.

6. I'm a collector and along with massive amounts of books, I collect stamps, spoons, Cubs bobbleheads, and stuffed monkeys (the plush kind, not the taxidermy kind - creepy!).

7. I'm planning a new blog feature for next month: Series in September, where I plan to make progress on all the series that I'm in the middle of.  I haven't announced it before now, so if you're reading this, you heard it here first! And if you're a blogger that wants to join me in the venture, let me know and we can team up and enjoy our progress together!

And now for the new recipients of The Versatile Blogger Award!  (Officially the award says pick fifteen, but I'd rather make this a little more special by picking fewer winners.  And don't feel that you have to pass it on, you're more than welcome just to sit back and know that someone out there thinks your blog is pretty darn cool!)

Paperback Pirate is the first blog I want to recognize.  Not only do I love the blog name (am I the only one that mentally sings "Paperback Pirate" to the tune of The Beatles' "Paperback Writer" in my head?) but blogger Captain Nick Sparrow shows great versatility by mixing book reviews with fun pictures, scrapbooking, and other pop culture news as well.

beyondthecurtain is my next choice with my apologies that the award, with its cute little flower, is a bit girly.  Greg is a talented blogger who shares his writing pursuits on beyondthecurtain and also writes a great sports blog called My Baseball Fantasy

And while I'm recognizing male bloggers, I'd also like to pass this award to M. Clifford Author.  For those that enjoyed, my interview with M. Clifford earlier this year, the blog has updates, related articles, and interesting tidbits about his work.

Another blog that I've recently discovered and want to recognize is The Window Seat Reader.   Blogger Bailey has a beautiful layout and writes really great reviews with a cute method of rating books too - instead of star ratings look for how many seashells are awarded each new read.

(Side note: I have another pick here, but the blog seems to be having technical difficulties so think of this as a placeholder until that blog is back online.)

The Reading Journey is my next selection.  Great reviews mark lots of blogs around here, but something that really makes The Reading Journey stand out to me is the visuals and specifically the photography that's often featured there.

I also want to pass this award to Nouns and Violets.  This is another blog that first caught my eye by title alone (so much so that I had to inquire about the title's origin - it's from a T.S. Eliot poem), and blogger Melissa's posts are full of wit and interesting anecdotes about life and pop culture - definitely versatile blogging.

Last but not least, I want to award the Versatile Blogger Award to The Broke and The Bookish.  Subtitled "...will read for food" the blog is a compilation of reviews and fun "Top Ten Lists" by an engaging and talented group of college readers.  The multiple writers bring new perspectives and a great variety of reading tastes to create a highly enjoyable blog!

Congratulations to all of you and thanks again to Zee's Worldly Obsessions!  You all make the world of blogging an immensely enjoyable experience!

(Quick update: Between composing and posting this entry, I was informed that Bailey over at The Window Seat Reader won this award from another blogger and generously chose me as a recipient!  All the more reason for everyone to hop over and check out Bailey's lovely blog!)

And the winner is....

Congratulations to Ellen, winner of The French Blue giveaway!

On favorite gems, Ellen said, "My favorite gemstone is the one on my left hand. I know that's overtly sentimental, but it's true."

Thanks again to everyone who entered the contest!  I wish you all could win and I really enjoyed reading your responses.   Since there were so many entrants, stay tuned for another Her Book Self Giveaway later this year!

winner was chosen using a random list generator from random.org

Great Blog Neighbor Award

Casey over at The Bookish Type recently bestowed upon Her Book Self the "Great Blog Neighbor Award"!  Since I only went public with this blog on May 1st, I was extremely flattered by this small recognition from a book blogging peer.  (And now would be a perfect time to check out The Bookish Type if you have not done so already - I was first drawn to The Bookish Type for "Monsters in May" and I'm eagerly awaiting the reviews to come with this month's "Jane in June".)  In the spirit of paying it forward - as seems to be the tradition with awards like this - I want to pass the "Great Blog Neighbor Award" on to three really awesome fellow bloggers:

A Present Opened Again and Again...  (by Ellen) is a wonderful blog about books for children and, as the title indicates, the thoughtful reviews are a good reminder about how books for youngsters are easily enjoyed by readers of all ages.

Ticket To Anywhere (by Irish) is a blog whose title extols the passport nature of literature.  Along with the fun feature of Book Trailer Mondays, there are frequent "interviews" with book characters, which I found to be an interesting and creative way of reviewing books.

A Bit of Light Reading (by biblioholic) is one reader's chapter-by-chapter thoughts on J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.  It perfectly fits the theme of this award: "Bringing Book Readers Together One Blog @ a Time!"

Thanks again to The Bookish Type for this award and congratulations to the new recipients!
